WebsterUniversity blasted the top-ranked Captains 11-1 in the opening round of theNCAA Division III South Regional.
CNUhad not played in nearly a month, and it appeared that the Captains were rusty.
Schneiderallowed one run on five hits, striking out six while walking none. CodyStevenson led the Gorlok attack, going 3-for-4, with three runs scored and fourstolen bases. Joe Gerace was 2-for-4, with two runs scored and two stolenbases. Webster stole eight bases and kept CNU on its heels defensivelythroughout the game.
Geraceand Stevenson opened the scoring with back to back singles with one out in thethird. After a double steal and a strikeout, Anthony Genna drove a two-out,two-run single into left field to put Webster up 2-0. Shaky fielding by the Captains helped theGorloks pick up their third and fourth runs.
AfterCraig Schaefer led off the fourth with a double, he scored on a wild throw tofirst on a Paul Kienker sacrifice bunt. In the fifth, Stevenson led off with aninfield hit and scored on a wild pitch after reaching third on a hit and run byNathan Shelton. Webster pushed across two more runs in the frame to go up 6-0.The Gorloks added a single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings, and threemore in the ninth.
Thebeatdown could have been worse, but Webster left nine men on base.
Schneiderheld the Captains without a base runner for the first 5.1 innings of the gamebefore Billy Steel finally stopped the no-hitter with a looper into rightfield. Connor Madden followed with a single up the middle, but the Captainswere held off the board.
Websterwill play the loser of the Piedmont-Salisbury game, on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ETat USA Stadium.
CNUfinally got on the board in the eighth inning, when Chris McDougal led off witha single and Ben Lenda reached on a hit-by-pitch. After a double play, McDougalwas on third base when Madden blasted a two-out run-scoring triple to rightcenter field. Madden went 2-for-3 with the Captains' lone RBI.
ChristopherNewport will face Wabash on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.
